… After conquering Lydia in 547 BC, the Achaemenid Empire allowed the local coinage to continue as before. However, Darius I (3rd emperor, 522-486 BC) decided to issue an imperial coinage and had two coins minted, named after himself, the dareikon (gold coin) and the siglos (silver coin). Both coins bear the image of the king galloping on his knees with a spear and a bow on the obverse, and are of extremely high quality. They were produced until the end of the empire. …
