1905‐75 British biologist. Graduated from Cambridge University. After serving as a lecturer in zoology and development at the University's Strangeways Laboratory, he served as professor and director of the Institute of Animal Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. During his time at Cambridge, he conducted experimental developmental research on the organizers of birds and amphibians, and, together with J. Needham and J. Brachet, discovered that inorganic substances also have the ability to induce genes. At the University of Edinburgh, he conducted developmental genetic research using Drosophila, examining issues of adaptive evolution and genetics in the developmental process.
