Kitagawa Sosetsu

Japanese: 喜多川相説 - きたがわ・そうせつ

Years of birth: unknown. Painter of the early Edo period. Family name: Kitagawa. A painter of the Tawaraya studio using the "Itonen" seal, he is presumed to have been active mainly in the second half of the 17th century, the next generation after Tawaraya Sosetsu, judging from his style of painting. He lived to the advanced age of 72, and was awarded the title of Hokkyo, but little else is known about his life, except that he was given the title of Hokkyo. Instead of the heavy floral paintings on gold backgrounds and deep colors of his predecessors, he excelled in elegant floral paintings in light colors with ink, and he also produced many works of oshie-paper folding screens, in which each panel has its own independent composition. 江戸前期の画家。姓は喜多川。「伊年」印を使用する俵屋工房の画家で,画風からみて俵屋宗雪より次世代の17世紀後半を中心に活躍したと推定される。72歳の高齢まで存命し,法橋に叙せられているほかは,伝記に関してはほとんど不明。前代までのような金地濃彩の重厚な草花図に代わって,墨画淡彩の瀟洒な草花図を得意とし,屏風の1扇ごとに独立した構図をとる押絵貼屏風の作品も多い。代表作「四季草花図屏風」(根津美術館蔵),「草花図屏風」(クリーブランド美術館蔵)。<参考文献>山根有三ほか編『琳派絵画全集宗達派2』
