Clay pipes, made from clay, were used from early on. These were the leading smoking tool in Europe until the 19th century, when the briar pipe appeared. They are said to have originally been made to imitate the pipes used by the indigenous peoples of the New World, but their production began in England towards the end of the 16th century, and as smoking became popular they began to be produced in various countries, including the Netherlands.
