1890‐1956 American geographer. Born in Illinois, he studied at Beloit College (Wisconsin) and the University of Chicago. He initially earned a master's degree in history, but his interest gradually shifted to geography, and he earned his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1920. He became a lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Chicago in 1920, and in 1928 moved to Harvard University as professor of the newly established chair in human geography. He edited the Annals of the Association of American Geographers (AAAG) from 1930 to 1942, and became the society's president in 1944.
