Commonly known as "Kezoori (Hair Shaving)". Joruri. Sewamono (domestic drama). 3 volumes. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in 1718 (Kyoho 3). This dramatization is based on a case decided by the Osaka Nishimachi Magistrate's Office in the same year, in which Ishigaki Yaemon and others were involved in illegal smuggling. Kyoto merchant Komachiya Soushichi joined the pirate Kezori Kuemon's gang in order to marry a prostitute from Yanagimachi, Hakata, and made a lot of money, but on his parents' warning, he and the prostitute flee the country, but are surrounded by police and commit suicide. The first volume, "Motofune Okudaya", is often performed as a kabuki play. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
