A city in the Moscow Oblast in western Russia. It is located about 100 km south of Moscow, where the Nara River flows into the Oka River. It was built in 1374 as a fortress to protect Moscow from attacks by the Tatars. As it was located along the transportation route between Moscow and the Crimean Peninsula, it has long been a center of commerce and handicrafts. Currently, it is a major textile city in the Moscow Oblast, producing cotton textiles and synthetic fibers. It also has a machinery industry. The Kremlin (fortress), built in the 16th century, and Vladychny Monastery are among the preserved buildings. It is connected to Moscow by rail and highway. Population: 126,496 (2010).
