A comic writer from the late Edo period. Born in Edo. His real name was Ikeda Hachiemon, commonly known as Hachizo. His foster family, the Ikeda clan, were shogunate vassals with a stipend of 300 koku, but when the previous Hachiemon died young, they lost their stipend, and Koijyo became the husband of the daughter born to the deceased's wife and her adopted son, Kichiemon. There are various theories about his career, including that he was a manufacturer or repairer of palanquins for feudal lords, a bamboo craftsman, an ivory carver, a sewing and foil maker, or a comb maker, but it is certain that he was a vaudeville entertainer. He was a disciple of the rakugo performer Takitei Riraku (later a Yoshiwara hokan), and gained popularity by adding music to old stories and composing dodoitsu (a type of Japanese folk song) based on themes received from his audience. Later, he became a comic storyteller (keeping his stage name the same) and made a name for himself in the field of comic books. His representative works include "Hanagoyomi Hasshojin" and "Wagoujin."
