Sir Frank Whittle

British aviation engineer and inventor of the jet engine. Born in Coventry. He conceived of the idea of ​​jet propulsion using gas turbines while attending the Air Force Academy, and patented it in 1930 after graduating. He continued his research while working at the Air Force, studying at Cambridge University, and successfully completed a test run in 1937. In parallel with this, Hans JP von Ohain (1911-1998) in Germany also independently developed the engine, and in 1939, he fitted it to a Heinkel He-178 and made the first jet flight. Whittle's jet made its first flight on May 15, 1941, using a Gloster E-28/39 single-seater monoplane with a W-1 engine thrust of 390 kg and a maximum speed of 544 km/h. Jet engine thrust increased rapidly, ushering in today's jet age. This invention made Britain the most advanced country in jet engines after World War II, and the technology spread to the United States, the Soviet Union, and other countries. He retired from the RAF as a Brigadier General in 1948, and served as technical adviser to BOAC (the forerunner of British Airways) and as an adviser to Power Jet Limited.

P. von Ohain（1911―1998）が独自に開発し、1939年ハインケルHe-178に装着して初のジェット機飛行を行っている。ホイットルのジェット機が初飛行をしたのは1941年5月15日で、グロスターE-28／39単葉単座機の機体を使い、W-1エンジンの推力390キログラム、最大速度は時速544キロメートルだった。ジェットエンジンの推力は急激に増大し、今日のジェット機時代を築いた。この発明によってイギリスは第二次世界大戦後のジェットエンジン先進国となり、技術はアメリカ、ソ連などに広まった。1948年、准将で空軍を退役、BOAC社（ブリティッシュ・エアウェイズの前身）技術顧問、パワー・ジェット社相談役を歴任した。
