Perov (English spelling) Vasiliy Grigor'evich Perov

Russian painter. Born in Tobolsk, but some say he was born in 1834. He studied at art schools in Arzamas and Moscow, and later studied in Paris as an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Arts. He painted themes of social interest from his student days, and his works "Easter Procession in the Village" (1861) and "Tea Party at the Mytishchi Family" (1862) accurately depict the realities of rural Russia at the time. His themes became more radical as the political situation changed, and works such as "Funeral" (1865), "The Troika" (1866), "The Drowned Woman" (1867), and "The Tavern by the Gate" (1868) are reminiscent of the world of Dostoevsky literature. He also excelled as a portrait painter, and is famous for his works "Ostrovsky" (1871), "Dostoevsky" (1872), and "Dali" (1872) (all in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow). In his later years, he taught the next generation of composers, including Kasatkin, Korovin, Nesterov, and Ryabushkin.
