Kinkouka - Kinkouka

Japanese: キンコウカ - きんこうか

A perennial plant (illustration) that grows in sunny wetlands such as alpine snowfield communities. It belongs to the subfamily Liliaceae, which is considered to be a primitive group within the lily family. The underground stems spread horizontally and multiply vigorously by vegetative reproduction. The leaves are linear and basal, and are folded at the midrib like the leaves of an iris. The flower stalk is 25 to 35 cm tall and bears short, sword-shaped leaves. Flowers bloom in July and August and are arranged in racemes. The flowers are yellow and grow in beautiful clusters. It is thought to be related to the genera Metanarthecium and Aletris because it has a small bract at the base of the pedicel and a single stigma.

高山の雪田群落などの日当りのよい湿地に生える多年草（イラスト）。ユリ科の中でも原始的なグループと考えられるシュロソウ亜科に属する。地下茎は横にはい，栄養繁殖でさかんに増える。葉は根生し線形で，アヤメの葉のように中肋で折り畳まれている。花茎は高さ25～35cmで，短い剣状の葉をつける。花は7～8月に咲き，総状花序にならぶ。花は黄色で，群生するので美しい。花柄基部に小苞をもつこと，柱頭が単一であることなどから，ノギラン属Metanartheciumやソクシンラン属Aletrisと類縁があると考えられる。
