Landowska

Japanese:
Landowska
A Polish female harpsichordist and pianist. She devoted herself to reviving the harpsichord, an instrument that had been forgotten since the end of the 18th century, and played a major role in the 20th century "Bach Renaissance." She studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory in her hometown and composition in Berlin. In 1900, she moved to Paris, where she taught at the Schola Cantorum while devoting herself to the study of the harpsichord and 17th-18th century music. In 1903, she began her career as a harpsichordist. In 1909, she published her book "Early Music." In 1912, she instructed the French instrument manufacturer Pleyel to create a large harpsichord with a rich sound. From 1913 to 1919, she served as the first harpsichord professor at the Berlin Conservatory, and in 1925, she founded a music school for harpsichord education in the suburbs of Paris. In 1941, she moved to the United States, where she lived ever since. Her musical outlook and performance style were quite different from those of today's early music performers, but she made a great contribution to reviving the harpsichord and its many repertoires. In addition to her baroque music for the harpsichord, she also recorded some of Mozart's finest piano performances. Famous pieces such as Falla's Harpsichord Concerto and Poulenc's Pastoral Concerto were dedicated to Landowska. → Kirkpatrick / Early Music
