Born 1924. Boa Vista, Cape Verde. A liberation movement leader and politician in Cape Verde. After working as a telecommunications engineer, he devoted himself to the liberation movement, and in 1956 he participated in the founding of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) (now the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde, PAICV). He served as a member of the party's Politburo and Central Committee until 1970. He was the party's vice-secretary-general in 1964 and a member of the Combat Council in 1965. He became a member of the Executive Committee for Security, Control and External Relations in 1970, and secretary-general in 1972. He became the first president of Cape Verde when the country gained independence in July 1975. He was re-elected president for a third term in 1986 under the PAICV's one-party system, but in the 1990s the country moved to a multi-party system, and suffered a crushing defeat in the presidential election in February 1991.

Died April 1, 1431. Lisbon Portuguese soldier. After the death of King Ferdinand I (the Beautiful) in 1383, he supported the future king, João (later João I (the Great King)), who was a commander of the Avis (Commander of the Order of the Avis), in order to protect Portugal's independence against Castile, who claimed the throne. In 1485, he led the Portuguese army in the Battle of Aljubarrota, defeating the Castilian army and protecting Portugal's independence. In 1415, he participated in the conquest of Ceuta. In 1423, he gave up all his ranks and became a Carmelite friar in Lisbon. His daughter Beatrice married João I's son Afonso, and became the founder of the House of Bragança.

The capital of Risaralda State in central-western Colombia. It is located about 180km west of the capital Bogota, at an altitude of about 1,460m, on the western foot of the central mountain range of the Andes, with the fertile Cauca Valley spreading out to the west. Founded in 1863. It is the commercial and industrial center of an agricultural and pastoral region where coffee cultivation and cattle farming are thriving, and is home to coffee roasting, confectionery and other food processing industries, as well as textile industries. It is also home to the Pereira Polytechnic University (1961). The country's largest zoo is located nearby. A railroad and road connect to Armenia, about 30km south, where it connects to the main road that runs east toward Bogota. Population: 352,530 (1995 estimate).
