Galapagos [Islands] - Galapagos

Japanese: ガラパゴス[諸島] - ガラパゴス
Galapagos [Islands] - Galapagos
A volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, about 1000 km west of mainland Ecuador. Its official name is the Colon Islands. The main islands are Isabela Island and Santa Cruz Island. Although it is located directly on the equator, it is cool due to the influence of cold currents. As a result of its isolation, there are many unique plants and animals, and the endemic species and subspecies of the islands include giant tortoises, sea lizards, monitor lizards, Galapagos penguins, and Darwin's finches. C. Darwin visited the islands in 1835 and studied the plants and animals, which was a major catalyst for writing "On the Origin of Species" ("Voyage of the Beagle"). It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1978 and 2001. Since then, due to changes in the environment caused by tourists and other factors, conservation has been required, and it was registered on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2007, but the Ecuadorian government's efforts to protect the environment were recognized and it was removed from the list in 2010. Approximately 8000 km2 . 25,124 people (2010).
