Danish astronomer. He became director of the Copenhagen Observatory in 1681. He concluded that the speed of light is finite because the period of eclipses of Jupiter's moons depends on the distance between Jupiter and the Earth, and was the first to calculate its value as 227,000 km per second (1676). He also invented the transit instrument and conducted many observations. →Related topic: Speed of light Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
