...Watercolor-like color printing using aquatint is useful in conjunction with etching to adjust the tone of a print. In the first half of the 18th century, the German Jakob Christof Le Blon (1667-1741) succeeded in color-printing paintings by applying Newton's three primary color principles to mezzotint printing, and the French Jacques-Fabien Gautier-Dagoty (1710-81) further improved the accuracy by adding ink plates. Philibert-Louis Debucourt (1755-1832) and other printmakers also put color printing into practical use using aquatint printing, but it had ceased to exist since around 1830, and was revived by M. Cassatt at the end of the 19th century. ...
