Omiwatari - Omiwatari

Japanese: 御神渡 - おみわたり

Also called Owatari. A phenomenon in which the ice on a lake thickens and contracts and expands due to the temperature difference between day and night, cracking with a strange sound and pushing up into a line to form an ice bank, or pushing ice blocks up onto the lake shore. Lake Suwa is famous for this, and here the ice bank is said to be the trace of the divine procession of Suwa Myojin from the upper shrine to the goddess at the lower shrine, hence the name. It is used to tell good or bad fortune.

御渡とも。湖の結氷が厚くなって昼夜の温度差で収縮，かつ膨張，奇異な音響で裂け，線状に押し上げて氷堤を生じるか，または氷塊を湖岸につき上げる現象。諏訪湖が著名で，ここでは氷堤を，諏訪明神が上社から下社の女神の所に行く神幸の跡といい伝え，このように名づけた。吉凶を占う。
