A school of tea ceremony founded by Yamada Soen in the early Edo period. Soen, one of the four great Sotan masters, was recommended by his teacher Sen Soen to become the head tea master of Ogasawara Tadatomo, lord of Yoshida Castle in Mikawa (Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture), and was awarded a stipend of 100 koku. He subsequently served four generations of masters, Naganori, Nagasuke, and Nagashige, retiring in 1697 (Genroku 10) at the age of 71. In his later years, he went down to Edo, set up a residence in Honjo 2-chome, and attracted many disciples from a wide range of social classes, claiming to practice tea in the correct style of Rikyu. However, compared to the hermit-like tea style of Rikyu and Soen, which was devoted to Zen, Soen's tea style, perhaps due to his background, was relatively strongly influenced by the samurai style. Furthermore, the daimyo he served was descended from Ogasawara Sadamune, who was famous as the founder of etiquette, and the family had been knowledgeable about ceremonies for generations, which may have also influenced Soen's tea.
