The capital of Belize, Central America. Population 8,130 (2000). After the former capital, Belize City, sustained serious damage from a hurricane in October 1961, the city was newly built about 80 km inland from the city, in an area with little risk of flooding. It is equidistant from Belize City and another major city, Stann Creek. In August 1970, the central administrative functions were transferred there. Most of the residents are government officials.
