Viola (color) (English notation) viola

[Purple as a symbol]
Purple, a color made by overlapping blue and red, changes in various ways depending on the ratio of blue to red. In the West, different names are used for these changes, with those that are equal to each other called viola (originally meaning "violet") in Latin, those with a strong reddish hue called purpura (derived from the shellfish Purpura, from which crimson dye is extracted), and those with a strong blue hue called hyacinthus (derived from the blue-flowering plant Hyacinthus). Of these, purpura (the origin of the English word purple and the French word pourre) is an expensive dye, so silk fabrics dyed with it were especially prized, and in ancient Rome it was reserved for the imperial family.
