Pororoca - Pororoca (English spelling)

Pororoca - Pororoca (English spelling)

A bore (tidal tsunami) seen at the mouth of the Amazon River in South America. It is also called a pororoca. On the new moon day after the spring equinox, a spectacular bore occurs at the mouth of the Amazon River and the mouth of the Araguari River to the north, due to the shallow, funnel-shaped topography of the mouth, the large tidal difference, and the high water level during the rainy season. The front of a huge wave 4 to 5 meters high, with a maximum height of 8 meters, becomes an almost vertical wall, and pushes upstream in a nearly horizontal line from the mouth of the river. Its speed reaches 12 to 13 knots (about 6.5 meters per second). The energy and volume of the pororoca are so great that it knocks down vegetation on the riverbank, and the sound can reach as far as 22 kilometers inland. The pororoca is the largest bore in the world, but similar phenomena can also be seen at the mouths of the Qiantang River in China and the Severn River in the UK.
