This crab belongs to the family Grapsidae, order Decapoda, class Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. Among the closely related crabs, the so-called Sesquipedia, this crab is the most adapted to life on land, and can be found in upstream areas far from the sea. It is known from various places from Sagami Bay to Kyushu, as well as Taiwan, northern China, and Sulawesi (Celebes). Its carapace is up to 2 cm wide and has an almost square outline. There are no teeth behind the external orbital teeth, and the upper surface of the palm of the chelicerae has two rows of ridges with black setae. In addition, there are 18 or 19 granules lined up on the upper edge of the movable fingers. There is disagreement as to whether this combination of characteristics should be considered a subgenus or a genus in taxonomy.
