...Since a family refers to a limited part of the relatives, it can be represented by kinship, Verwandtschaft, parenté. The combination of a basic group and a local community such as a town or village can also be called a "basic society." This expresses the fact that kinship and local communities are as old as the history of mankind and are universal to all societies, including hunter-gatherer societies and modern industrial societies.
