A general term for insects in the Hemiptera family Coreidae, or one of these species. They range from small to large. They are so named because their antennae have four segments and extend from the lateral edge of the head (above the edge connecting the center of the compound eyes and the top of the head when viewed from the side). The horns on the dorsal side of the prothorax sometimes protrude forward or become spiny. Many species have widely spreading lateral edges of the abdomen. The membranous wing veins are finely reticulated. The hind femoral segments of the legs are sometimes thick and spiny or flattened. There are approximately 1,800 known species worldwide, with 55 known in Japan (including the families Coreidae and Eleuthero, described below). 半翅目ヘリカメムシ科Coreidaeの昆虫の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す。小型から大型のものまである。触角が4節で頭部側縁(側方から見て複眼の中央と頭頂を結ぶ縁より上)から出るのでこの名がある。前胸背側の角はときに前方に突出したり,とげ状となったりする。腹部側縁は広く広がる種類も多い。膜質の翅脈は細かく網状となる。肢の後腿節はときに太くとげをもったり扁平化したりする。世界に約1800種,日本からは55種(後述のホソヘリカメムシ科,ヒメカメムシ科を含む)が知られる。
