[Pharmaceutical distribution]
Currently, pharmaceuticals in Japan are distributed from pharmaceutical companies to consumers along the route shown in Figure 2. Approximately 80% of pharmaceuticals produced by pharmaceutical companies are prescription drugs for medical use intended for physicians, and are supplied via authorized dealers or wholesalers, or via a route directly connected to hospitals by pharmaceutical companies. The portion that is distributed through the so-called separation of medical and pharmaceutical functions, in which prescriptions are issued by hospitals and clinics and then pharmacy (dispensing pharmacy) provides the medical drug to the consumer (patient), is less than 10%.
