San Luis Potosi (English spelling)
The capital of the state of the same name in central Mexico. Population 488,238 (1990). 425 km northwest of Mexico City, at an altitude of 1,877 m. It is the agricultural center of the fertile San Luis Valley, and is also a mining city. It grew with the development of the silver mines in the 16th century. The Baroque cathedral and the Carmen Church, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, are reminders of the city's former prosperity, and glazed colored tiles are used for the roads, plazas, and church domes. Metallurgy, agricultural processing, and textiles are the main industrial sectors.
