Harigwa - Harigwa

Japanese: ハリグワ - はりぐわ
Harigwa - Harigwa
A thorny deciduous tree of the mulberry family native to China and Korea, occasionally cultivated. Its Chinese name is boxwood. Young branches grow well, and axillary buds grow short and straight, becoming thorns. The leaves are alternate and nearly elliptical. They are entire, glossy green on the upper side and pale green on the lower side. They are dioecious, and bloom around June. The male inflorescences appear in the leaf axils, are terminal on short stalks, are nearly spherical, and numerous flowers grow densely. The flowers consist of four perianths and four stamens opposite each other. The female inflorescences are also spherical, and the flowers have four perianths and one pistil, with a long style extending beyond the gap in the perianth.
