Seng Lang (English spelling)

Japanese: 僧朗 - そうろう（英語表記）Sēng láng

A Buddhist monk from the Southern Dynasties of China. Also called Da Lang. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Liaodong City (Liaoyang, Liaoning Province) in Goguryeo. Came to Jiankang (Nanjing) in the late 5th century and lectured on the Sanron and Huayan schools at Setsuzan Seika-ji Temple. The Sanron school, which began with Kumarajiva, had split into two schools, north and south, and had declined, but he unified and revived it, leading Emperor Wu of Liang to abandon the then popular "Jojitsuron" school and embrace the Sanron school. The Sanron school was later inherited by Jizo during the Sui dynasty and was perfected as the Sanron sect.

中国南朝期の仏僧。大朗とも称せられる。生没年不明。高句麗の遼東城(遼寧省遼陽)の人。5世紀後半に建康(南京)に来て，摂山棲霞寺で三論･華厳の学を講じた。クマーラジーバ(鳩摩羅什)に始まる三論の学は南北2派に分かれて衰微していたが，これを統合して再興させ，梁の武帝をして，当時盛んであった《成実論（じようじつろん）》を捨て三論の学を奉ぜしめるにいたった。三論の学は，のち隋代に吉蔵に継承されて三論宗として大成された。
