A moth belonging to the family Noctuidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. Its body is thick and flat. It is a large species with a wing span of about 80 mm. Both the body and wings are brownish black, the hind wings have transverse veins of the same color as the blue band, and the forewings are scattered with blue scales. It is distributed widely throughout most of Japan, as well as neighboring continents, Southeast Asia, and Australia. It has two generations per year and overwinters as an adult. In late autumn, it may hide in a dark place such as a door pocket or a corner of a kitchen until the following spring, but when the temperature rises due to heating, it will fly actively around the room. The larvae feed on the leaves of ramie, wild mustard, and paper mulberry. [Hiroshi Inoue] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
