Chilean politician. He started as a lawyer in 1897 and entered politics. With the support of urban capitalists and workers, he was elected president in 1920. In the midst of the post-World War I recession and the decline of the saltpeter industry, he introduced modernization policies such as separation of church and state, social security, labor laws, and the introduction of income tax. After a coup d'état interrupted his government in 1924, he enacted the progressive 1925 Constitution, but resigned after clashing with Defense Minister Ibáñez. After the collapse of Ibáñez's conservative dictatorship, he became president again in 1932 (until 1938), and put an end to the political turmoil of the Great Depression and adopted protectionism to rebuild the economy. → Related article Chile Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
