Born: March 17, 1686 in Paris [Died] April 30, 1755. Beauvais French painter, tapestry designer, and illustrator. He studied under Largillière and painted hunting scenes, animals, still lifes, and portraits. From around 1720 he focused on painting animals, and became one of the greatest animal painters of the 18th century. From 1726 he designed Gobelins tapestries, and in 1734 he became director of the Beauvais tapestry factory, and in 1736 he became superintendent of the Gobelins weaving factory. He designed and supervised a series of eight tapestries (1736-1749) depicting the hunting scenes of Louis XV, and became the official painter of royal hunting scenes.
