...Yugoslav poet. Born in Macedonia. After studying philosophy in Athens, he started a nationalist movement with his brother Dimitar M. (1810-62) while collecting folk songs. While studying in Moscow (1856-60), he wrote "Longing for the South," reminiscing about his hometown on the shores of Lake Ohrid. He went to Istanbul to rescue his brother who was imprisoned, but was captured and massacred.
