An archipelago of about 500 islands off the west coast of Scotland, UK. The outer islands of Lewis, North Uist, and South Uist across the Little Minch are called the Outer Hebrides, while the inner islands of Skye, Mull, and Rum are called the Inner Hebrides. The area is humid and rainy, making it unsuitable for growing grains, so fishing and extensive livestock farming are practiced. Since the 6th century, it has been invaded by Scandinavians many times, and was part of Norway until it was incorporated into Scotland by a treaty in 1266. It is also the home of hand-spun and hand-woven Harris Tweed. Total area is about 7,500 km2 . Population is about 48,500 (1981). St. Kilda, which belongs to the Outer Hebrides, is a bird sanctuary and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1986. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
