A cape located at 34°21'S and 18°29'E, at the southwestern tip of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is located about 160 km northwest of Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the African continent, at the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula, and at the western exit of False Bay. In Afrikaans, it is called Kaap de Goede Hoop. In 1488, the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to visit this area and named it Cabo Tormentoso (Cape of Storms). Later, Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal renamed it the Cape of Good Hope in hopes of discovering a sea route to India. Then, in 1497, Vasco da Gama opened a sea route to India through here. The name Cape of Good Hope is said to have been named by King John II of Portugal to commemorate the discovery of the sea route to India. The cape's Vasco da Gama Peak has a steep cliff of about 250 meters, and the entire cape is designated as the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Cape Point, which borders it to the east, is a famous tourist destination.
