A small island in the central Aegean Sea, at the center of the Cyclades. According to Greek mythology, it was the birthplace of Apollo and his sister Artemis, and the site of the Temple of Apollo. The Delian League was formed under Athenian rule, and the island prospered as a commercial center in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. It was destroyed by the army of Mithridates in 88 BC. Excavations began by the French in 1873, uncovering many ruins, and it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1990.
