...The 1739 (Genbun 4) Chikajoshin (Report on the Underground) map shows place names such as Sotohamacho, Nakanocho, Akamagachō, Inarichō, Jonokoshi, Kohosoi, and Ohosoi. The Chōfu clan established the Akamagaseki zaibantō in Nanbuchō, and had the zaibantōyaku (guards) and machikatayaku (town officials) control the town administration, while the ōtoshiyori (elderly officials) and konoshiyori (elderly officials) were in charge of the practical aspects. In 1672 (Kanbun 12), Kawamura Zuiken developed the Nishimawari route, and when Kitamae ships began to transport goods from the northern provinces to Osaka, Akamagaseki developed greatly as a base for Nishimawari shipping. ...
