One of the five rivers of the Punjab in northern Pakistan. Total length 764 km. In ancient Sanskrit documents it was written as the Irāvatī River, from which the present name is said to have been derived. It originates in the Pir Panjal Mountains in northwestern Himachal Pradesh, India, flows northwest, enters the Punjab Plain, and flows southwest to the Chenab River. From the mid-19th century, the Upper and Lower Bari Doab Canals were constructed using the river as a water source, contributing to the development of the Doab. After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, a conflict arose between the two countries over the water rights. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
