Battle of Henauke - Battle of Henauke

Japanese: ヘナウケの戦 - ヘナウケのたたかい
Battle of Henauke - Battle of Henauke
In 1643 (Kan'ei 20), the Ainu people of the Setanai (present-day Setana District, Hokkaido) - Shimakomaki (Shimamaki District) region of Western Ezo rose up in action against the Matsumae clan, marking the first battle of the Ainu people in the modern era. Henauke was the name of an Ainu chief. Many details of the battle are unclear, but what we know from records in Matsumae clan chronicles such as "Fukuyama Hifu" is that in the spring of that year, a large-scale Ainu uprising took place, led by the Ainu chief Henauke, with Setanai as its base, and that the Matsumae clan quickly dispatched a suppression force led by Kakizaki Toshihiro and other senior vassals, which was suppressed around May.
