Pennines (English spelling)

Japanese: ペナイン[山脈]（英語表記）Pennines

A mountain range that runs north to south through northern England, forming the watershed between the North Sea and the Irish Sea. The name is thought to come from the Celtic word pen (meaning "high"). It stretches for about 220 km from the Tyne River lowlands near the border with Scotland to the Peak District in the northern Midlands, and is a hilly mountain range with an altitude of 300 to 500 m. The geology consists of limestone, siliceous sandstone, and coal seams from the Carboniferous period of the Paleozoic era, and it has an anticline structure as a result of the Hercynian orogeny.

イギリス，イングランド北部を南北に走る脊梁山脈で北海側とアイリッシュ海側の分水界をなす。地名はケルト語のpen(〈高い〉の意)に由来すると考えられる。スコットランドとの境界に近いタイン川低地からミッドランズ北部のピーク･ディストリクトまで全長約220kmにおよび，高度300～500mの丘陵性山地である。地質は古生代石炭紀の石灰岩，ケイ質砂岩，石炭層などからなり，ヘルシニア造山運動の結果，背斜構造をなしている。
