Kounelis, J.

After the Second World War, Renato Guttuso (1912-87), a figurative artist who advocated the theory of socialist realism, represented the Italian left in figurative art, while Giulio Turcato (1912- ) and Emilio Vedova (1919- ) advocated abstract techniques and sparked controversy. After the 1950s, a movement to change the realm of art became active, going beyond art as a tableau, with artists such as Alberto Burri (1915- ), who collaged the material itself, Luciano Fontana, who tore canvases with a razor, Piero Manzoni (1934-63), Jannis Kounelis (1936- ), and Giulio Paolini (1940- ), who presented the material itself. Today, contemporary Italian painters are at the forefront of an international movement exploring the use of technology, body art, and other possibilities.
