Born: April 16, 1646, Paris Died May 11, 1708. Marly. French architect. Son of the painter R. Harduin and nephew of F. Mansart, he took the surname Mansart in 1666. In 1675 he was appointed royal architect and elected member of the Academie Royale de Architecture. In 1676, at the behest of Louis XIV, he designed the château for Madame de Montespan, and in 1678 he directed the expansion of the Palace of Versailles, designing the Hall of Mirrors (1678-84), the Orangerie (81-86), the Grand Trianon (87), the Chapel (99-1710), the south wing, and the north wing. He skillfully combined classicism and baroque styles, and designed and supervised the construction of the Palais de Marly (1679-86), the Saint-Louis Basilica at the Hôtel des Invalides (1680-1706), and many other palaces and chateaus in and around Paris, but he died while supervising the construction of the chapel at the Palace of Versailles.
