Al‐Fazārī (English spelling)

Arab astronomer of the late 8th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was active in Baghdad and served the Abbasid caliph Mansur (reigned 754-775). Together with an Indian astronomer who was visiting the court at the time, he translated an Indian astronomical work (probably the Brahmasupta Siddhanta) into Arabic. The translation, titled Sindhind Jij, no longer exists, had a great influence on early Arabic astronomy. In the following century, the Greek astronomical tradition became mainstream, but Indian elements remained.

8世紀後半のアラブの天文学者。生没年は不詳。バグダードで活躍し，アッバース朝のカリフ，マンスール(在位754‐775)に仕えた。当時この宮廷を訪れていたインド人天文学者とともに，インドの天文学書(おそらく《ブラーフマスプタ･シッダーンタ》)をアラビア語に翻訳した。訳書は現存しないが，《シンドヒンド･ジージュ》と名づけられ，初期のアラビア天文学に大きな影響を与えた。次の世紀にはギリシア天文学の伝統が主流となったが，インド的要素はその後も残った。
