Wet printing

In color printing, for example when printing four colors, the previous ink is printed one on top of the next before it dries. This is also called wet printing. Generally, color printing requires drying each color on a sheet of paper before printing the next, so four-color printing requires a lot of time and effort, which slows down production. In particular, color printing using coated paper or art paper does not allow the ink to penetrate the paper and dry, as it does with newsprint. In offset lithographic printing, which is often used for color printing, the most productive method is to use a roll of paper to continuously print each color, so the next ink is naturally printed on top of the wet ink.

カラー印刷において，たとえば4色を刷り重ねるとき，前に刷ったインキが乾かないうちに，次々と刷り重ねること。湿式印刷ともいう。一般にカラー印刷は，枚葉紙に1色刷るごとに乾かし，次の印刷をするから，4色刷りではかなり手間と時間を必要とし，生産がはかどらない。とくにコート紙やアート紙を使用するカラー印刷では，新聞紙のようにインキが紙に浸透して乾燥するということがない。また，カラー印刷に多用されるオフセット平版印刷では，巻取紙を使って連続的に各色インキを刷り重ねる方法がもっとも生産性が高いから，いきおい未乾燥インキの上に次のインキを重ねることになる。
