Chizugoke - Chizugoke

A species of lichen in the Heterogenous family. It grows closely on acidic rocks, mainly in high mountains. The lichen bodies are small, crusty, yellow in surface, divided into sections of various sizes, with black edges. The lichen organelles are embedded within the lichen bodies. The way this lichen grows looks like a map drawn on the rock, hence the name Chizugoke. It is found throughout Japan, as well as widely from the polar regions to the temperate zone.

地衣類ヘリトリゴケ科の1種。高山の主として酸性の岩上に密着して生える。地衣体は小形の痂(か)状で、表面は黄色、大小不同の区画に分かれ、縁(へり)は黒色に縁どられている。子器(しき)は地衣体の中にうずもれてできる。この地衣の生えているようすが、岩上に地図を描いたようにみえるところからチズゴケの名がある。日本各地のほか、南北極地圏から温帯にかけて広く分布する。
