A village in Kamiina County, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 12,133 (1995). It occupies the west bank of the Tenryu River and the northern part of the Ina Basin. The village is divided into east and west by the Nishiminowa district of Ina City. The western part is mountainous, with the Kiso Mountains' Kyogatake (2,296m), while the eastern part is in the Ina Basin and the settlement has developed below the terrace cliffs of the Tenryu River, and is connected by the JR Iida Line and National Route 153. With the construction of the Nishi Tenryu Canal in the early Showa period, the terrace surface was converted into rice paddies, and the village was mainly agricultural, with rice as the mainstay, as well as dairy farming, sericulture, and fruit cultivation. However, with the opening of the Chuo Expressway, factories producing electronic parts and other products have moved in, and the village is also becoming a residential area.
