Biochemist. Born in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture. Having lost his parents at an early age, he lived in a pharmacy in front of Akamon Gate in Hongo, Tokyo, and worked hard to graduate from the private Tokyo School of Pharmacy (now Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences) in 1907 (Meiji 40). In 1919 (Taisho 8), he became an assistant to Sudo Kenzo (1872-1934) at Kanazawa Medical University (now Kanazawa University School of Medicine), and in 1924 he studied in Germany and Austria. He learned about biochemical research into intracellular metabolism, which was in its infancy at the time, from Mayerhof and others at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (now Max Planck Institute). He returned to Japan in 1931 (Showa 6) and became an assistant professor at Kanazawa Medical University, and a professor there in 1933. He invented and established a special system of micro- and ultra-microanalysis (azotometry), and received the Asahi Culture Prize (1952) and the Japan Academy Prize (1953) for his achievements.
