Weddell Sea - Weddell Sea

An inlet between the Antarctic Peninsula and Coats Land on the Atlantic coast of Antarctica. It was named after the first expedition by British explorer J. Weddell in 1823. In the inner part, the Ronne Ice Shelf and the Filchner Ice Shelf jut out onto the sea surface, and in winter the ice extends up to about 56° south latitude, making it one of the most difficult parts of the continental coast to reach. Shackleton Station was temporarily built on the eastern end of the ice shelf as the starting point for the British Antarctic Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1957-58) led by V. Fuchs. Currently, the General Belgrano Station (built in 1955) of the Argentine expedition continues observations to the west of the ice shelf.

南極大陸沿岸部の大西洋側，南極半島とコーツランドの間の入り海。 1823年イギリスの J.ウェッデルの初探検にちなんで命名。奥部にはロンネ棚氷とフィルヒナー棚氷が海面に張出しており，冬季には南緯 56°ぐらいまで氷が広がり，大陸沿岸では接岸が困難な部分の一つ。棚氷の東端には V.フックスらイギリス南極横断隊 (1957～58) の出発点としてシャクルトン基地が一時建設された。現在はその西隣でアルゼンチン隊のヘネラルベルグラノ基地 (55建設) が観測を続けている。
