A volcanic island in the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is the administrative center of the Northern Mariana Islands, a commonwealth of the United States. The inhabitants are mainly Chamorros, who practice fishing and produce copra. Discovered by the Spanish in 1521, it was a German territory, a Japanese mandate, and a US trust territory before becoming a US commonwealth in 1986. It is now a tourist island on a par with Guam. On June 15, 1944, during the Pacific War, the US military launched a landing attack on the island, and after fierce fighting in which most of the Japanese troops were killed, the US military occupied the island on July 9. The US military gained a base for air raids on the Japanese mainland. Approximately 120 km2 . Population: 48,220 (2010). → Related topics Pacific War (Japan) | Tapochao [Mountain] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
