A representative series of paperbacks published by Penguin Books Ltd. in the UK. It was first published by Allen Lane in 1935. It mainly reprints classics, but also includes excellent original works. It is divided into "Penguin", which focuses on modern novels, "Pelican", which focuses on general knowledge books, and "Puffin", which focuses on children's books. Within "Penguin", there are "Classics", "Shakespeare Series", "Modern Classics", "Selected Poets", etc., and also the large-format "King Penguin". イギリスのPenguin Books Ltd.より出版されているペーパーバックスの叢書の代表的なもの。1935年にレーンAllen Laneが創刊した。名著の復刻を中心にしたが,すぐれた書下ろしも含む。そのうち近代小説を中心とした〈ペンギン〉,一般教養書を中心にした〈ペリカン〉,児童ものを中心にした〈パフィン〉などに分かれるが,〈ペンギン〉の中には〈古典もの〉〈シェークスピア・シリーズ〉〈近代古典〉〈詩人選〉などがあり,また判の大きな〈キング・ペンギン〉などもある。
