Heigun Island

An island in the Iyonada Sea in the Seto Inland Sea, southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is part of Yanai City. Formerly a village of Heigun. Area 16.62 square kilometers. According to records from 1841 (Tenpo 12), there were 395 houses and a population of 2,178. As a boatman's crew member of the Hagi Domain, the island had a stipend of 892 koku. There are the semi-agricultural, semi-fishing villages of Higashiura and Hani on the eastern end of the island, and Tsuruho and Nishiura on the western coast. The sloping land on the island is well cultivated, and there are many mandarin orange orchards. The fishing industry is dominated by octopus trap fishing and line fishing for sea bream and sea bass. There is a swimming beach at Iyamishima on the southeastern end. There is a regular ferry service from Yanai Port. Population 485 (2009).

山口県南東部、瀬戸内海の伊予灘(いよなだ)にある島。柳井(やない)市に属す。旧平郡村。面積16.62平方キロメートル。1841年（天保12）の記録では、家数395軒、人口2178人。萩(はぎ)藩の船手(ふなて)組舸子給(かこきゅう)として892石をもっていた。島の東端に東浦と羽仁(はに)、西岸に鶴甫(つるほ)と西浦の半農半漁村がある。島内の傾斜地はよく耕地化され、ミカン園が多い。漁業はタコ壺(つぼ)や、タイ、スズキの一本釣りが盛ん。南東端の五十谷三島(いやみしま)に海水浴場がある。柳井港からの定期船便がある。人口485（2009）。
